The Stair That Isn't There

Working on larger projects than furniture pieces, John Barnard brings a complete mastery of different materials to his designs. Here we see a classic example.

The brief was to gain access to the upper floor. Simple enough. Stairs would do the job.

But what stairs! Working with specialist industrial glassmakers and the local Building Department's engineering office on important safety considerations, this design uses specially constructed toughened glass sides and a unique bolt mechanism designed by John to make the stairs themselves barely noticeable from the interior. This design effectively gives back tens of square metres of space that would otherwise have been lost, and provides great sight lines to the outside.

In projects of this nature, John's unique combination of engineering competence and design flair, and our ability to actually build and install the design are all highly valued by architects and interior designers, and of course by the ultimate beneficiary: you, the client.
